How to send a PET preform mold, blow mold or hot runner enquiry that gets an accurate quote fast

Updated Author: LIHE Precision Engineering Team

A mold enquiry is a request for quotation (RFQ) that tells a toolmaker what part you need to produce, on which machine and in what volume, so the mold can be designed, priced and scheduled. LIHE Precision (Foshan Lihe Precision Machinery Co.,Ltd.) is a manufacturer of PET preform molds, blow molds, closure and compression molds, hot runner systems and mold components for the beverage and packaging industry, with manufacturing in Foshan, China. This guide lists the information our sales and engineering team needs for each product type, what happens after you send it, and which contact channel to use.

Why a complete mold enquiry gets a faster, more accurate quotation

Most delays in mold quotations come from back-and-forth questions, not from engineering work. A preform mold for a Husky machine and one for a SACMI or Netstal machine have different interfaces, a 2925 neck needs different neck rings than a PCO 1881 neck, and a hot-fill blow mold is built differently from a cold-fill one. If these points are missing, the first reply can only be a list of questions.

  • Name the machine: brand, model and, if possible, the serial number or the existing mold number.
  • Name the product: preform, closure, bottle or part, with a drawing, a 3D file or a physical sample.
  • Give the quantity: number of cavities, number of molds or number of spare parts.
  • State what you already have: existing molds, hot runners or parts that the new tooling must fit or replace.
  • State the target: new product, capacity increase, lightweighting, neck finish change or replacement of worn parts.
  • Add the delivery country and the delivery term you prefer, for example FOB or CIF, so logistics can be included in the offer.

Mold enquiry checklist by product type

Use the table as a checklist before you write. Lead times are the standard figures LIHE publishes; the exact date is confirmed in the quotation after the engineering review.

Product typeMust-have informationHelpful filesPublished lead time
PET preform moldInjection machine brand and model, cavitation (32 to 160 cavities), neck finish, preform weight in g, resin (PET or rPET share)Preform drawing, 3D file or samples; drawing of the existing moldPilot mold 20 days; standard PET mold 8 weeks
Closure or compression moldCap type (one-piece, two-piece, tethered), neck size such as 26mm, 28mm or 38mm, cavitation (12 to 72 cavities), injection machine or SACMI compression lineCap drawing, cap samples, drawing of the bottle neckCap mold parts 4 weeks; complete molds confirmed in the quotation
Blow moldBlowing machine brand and model (one-step or two-step), bottle volume in ml, fill type (cold fill, hot fill or aseptic), number of cavities per moldBottle drawing or 3D file, preform drawing, label panel and base requirementsConfirmed in the quotation
Hot runner systemMachine and mold it must fit, cavitation (up to 144 cavities for preforms, 96 for closures), valve gate requirementExisting hot runner or mold drawings, photos of the nameplateConfirmed in the quotation

PET preform mold and hot runner enquiries: details that change the quote

  • Neck finish: state the standard (for example PCO 1881, PCO 1810, 1716, 3025, 2925, 38mm or a wide-mouth size) or send the neck drawing for a custom finish.
  • Preform weight and length: give the target weight in g and the wall thickness if known; if you plan lightweighting, give the current and the target weight.
  • Cavitation and machine: the number of cavities has to match the machine's clamp, shot size and platen layout, so name the exact model rather than only the brand.
  • Hot runner scope: say whether you need a complete new mold with hot runner, a hot runner only, or refurbishment and spare parts for an existing hot runner (nozzle tips, valve pins, heaters, seals).
  • Material: say whether you run virgin PET or a share of rPET, because this affects venting and maintenance planning.
  • Existing tooling: if you run a Husky, SACMI, Netstal, SIPA or similar mold today, say whether the new parts must be interchangeable with it.

Closure, compression and blow mold enquiries: details that change the quote

  • Closures: give the cap type (one-piece, two-piece, with tamper-evident band, EU tethered), the neck finish it fits and the cap weight in g.
  • Closures: state whether production is by injection molding or on a SACMI CCM compression line, because the tooling is different.
  • Blow molds: give the bottle volume (for example 330ml, 500ml or 1.5L), the fill type and the machine; a hot-fill bottle filled at about 85 to 95°C needs a heat-set design, while standard PET deforms above about 60°C.
  • Blow molds: say whether you need split-type quick-change molds, base molds only, or a complete set including shells and clamping bases.
  • Blow molds: if the bottle must run on a different blowing machine than the one it was designed for, mention it so conversion parts are quoted together with the mold.

Spare parts and conversion parts: send what you already have

Replacement and conversion parts for Husky, SACMI, Otto and similar systems are made from the customer's existing parts or drawings. The fastest enquiries include clear references to the original part.

  • The original part number, if the OEM part number is still readable.
  • A photo of the part next to a ruler, plus the key dimensions you can measure.
  • The machine or mold serial number and the position of the part in the mold.
  • The reason for replacement: wear, damage, a new neck finish or a new bottle format.
  • Whether you can send one used part as a sample for measurement.

What happens after you send your mold enquiry

  1. Step 1: The international sales department at the factory confirms your enquiry and, if something on the checklist is missing, asks for it in one list instead of several separate emails.
  2. Step 2: The engineering team reviews the machine platform, cavitation, neck finish and drawings, and checks whether existing parts, drawings or samples are needed as a reference.
  3. Step 3: You receive a quotation that states the scope of supply and the lead time; prices are only given in the written quotation, never on the website.
  4. Step 4: After the order, the engineering and design center prepares the design with CAD/CAM, 3D simulation and flow analysis, and the design is agreed with you before production starts.
  5. Step 5: The mold or parts are machined, measured in the in-house Zeiss CMM lab and shipped; validation and inspection reports are supplied on request.
  6. Step 6: If needed, the technical team supports machine interface audits, mold installation and machine start-up, on site or remotely.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get a mold price without a drawing?
A budget discussion is possible with the machine model, cavitation, neck finish and preform weight, but a firm quotation needs a drawing, a 3D file or a sample. Prices are given only in written quotations.
How long does a new PET preform mold take?
LIHE publishes 20 days for pilot molds and 8 weeks for standard PET molds. Replacement parts and cap mold parts take 4 weeks. The confirmed lead time is stated in each quotation.
Do I deal with an agent or with the factory?
The contact details on this page belong to LIHE's own international sales department at the factory, so engineering questions go directly to the team that designs and builds the mold.
Can you quote replacement parts for a Husky or SACMI mold?
Yes. Conversion parts are made to be 100% interchangeable with Husky, SACMI, SIPA, NETSTAL, MHT, OTTO, ASB, Krupps and Corvaglia systems. Send the part number, photos or a sample part with your enquiry.
Can I ask for an inspection report with the quotation?
Inspection and validation reports from the Zeiss CMM lab are supplied on request. Mention in your enquiry which dimensions or features you want reported so they can be included in the scope.
